The show must go on, virtually

The coronavirus pandemic has however challenged the event organisers to rethink how the 2021 event would be produced, without putting attendees’ health at risk, but still retaining the spectacle and excitement of the live show.

10 February 2021: The Consumer Awards has become one of South Africa’s most popular motor industry events, combining spectacular live performances and stage production with an impressive display of shortlisted vehicles and the excitement of celebrating the winners.

“The pandemic has forced us to push the envelope. As a team we’ve had to find an innovative way to host these awards in the same spectacular fashion to which the industry and our guests have become accustomed. Through hard work and dedication, I am proud to say we’ve done exactly that, and this year’s event will be presented using a combination of television stations and social media platforms,” says Ghana Msibi, WesBank CEO of Motor.

“In these unprecedented times it’s become more critical than ever to ensure the car decisions we as consumers make are well informed and that they make our ownership journey as simple as possible. This is why WesBank supports in this year’s “My Car, My Freedom” initiative. With this, the sixth edition of the consumer awards, we are proud to be associated with giving consumers the freedom of informed decision-making. Our OEMs continue to produce excellent vehicles, and we are proud to be part of celebrating their hard work. I want to say well done to all the nominees and congratulations to the final winners,” adds Msibi.

The 2021 Consumer Awards event will take place across several online and television channels, making use of an impressive variety of influencers and performers, and breaking the traditional format of a studio show bound to one location. The event will use short videos to take viewers on mini biographical journeys with car owners, showing how their cars contribute to their movement and freedom, and add value to their life stories.

For visual appeal, the artwork is bold and uses beautiful photography to reveal scenes of movement. The overall effect is expansive and dynamic, reiterating the freedom that we experience when we are journeying in our cars.

“We really had to bring our A game when conceptualising this year’s event. Not being able to host a physical event meant using platforms such as television and smart phones in innovative ways to bring this highly anticipated event to the public,” says Consumer Experience Manager Hannes Oosthuizen.

Viewers can watch the announcement of all 13 category winners during the 2021 Consumer Awards live broadcast, taking place on 15 February at 19:00 on DStv SuperSport channel 215. An edited version of the awards evening will be screened on 20 February at 21:30 on 1 Magic on DStv channel 103. Consumers can also watch the awards evening unfold by logging on to one of the following social media platforms: or Twitter - @CarsSouthAfrica.
